A broken heart can literally feel as if it has been fractured then shattered into a million pieces. The jutting spires of brokenness can tower to heights of impassable proportions, blocking the light of much needed insight and direction. The experience is so distorting, it can seem to dislodge, transport, and abandon you to an otherworldly wilderness without a map to navigate the way out. Loss, grief, sorrow, worry, suffering, all can cause such monstrous ramifications.
From these deep innermost canyons of suffering, we can encounter parts of ourselves that are discouragingly uncomfortable, parts that invariably disappoint, parts that demand isolation, parts that scream for anything other than the pain that has imprisoned the spirit, parts that go numb to living.
But the human spirit is, by nature, resilient, and the harshest imposed paths can remarkably awaken the warrior within...where a profound inner strength is revealed, a strength powerful enough to battle even the darkest depths of conflict and struggle. The mere act of holding on, of fighting back if even a little, of taking some perceived small action, even the act of acceptance, can facilitate forward momentum. And then, suddenly and unexpectedly, a single moment of clarity arrives that grants hope to blossom...and with gratitude, the climb toward healing begins.
From minuscule to massive, life experiences transform us all, but I believe it us up to each one of us to determine what shape that transformation will become, and in turn, what destiny can be realized.

Description:
Ravens. These intelligent, intuitive birds have conjured an array of symbolisms and lore throughput the world for centuries. Across the different cultures ravens are considered a powerful magical presence, messengers between earth and the heavens, keepers of secrets, tricksters, harbingers of change, messengers of death, overseers of spiritual death and rebirth, healers of pain and brokenness, helpers in transition and transformation, and much more.
In this painting I see something similar to the way the solstices come in and change the length of day and natural rhythms of life. I see the process of change happening in the colorful layers of paint as meanings and metaphors - from seasonal changes ascending from a misty late-summer morning upward into the winds of autumn that carry our flying friends toward winter and upward still into the celestial heavenly realms of the sun and moon, to metaphoric change of 'what was' into 'what is now' and towards 'what will be' and I also see the effect of the difficult change that the year 2020 has forced into all our lives. We all feel it, change, anxiousness and conflict that's happening all around us, in our day to day lives, in our local settings, our national situations, and in global dynamics and communities.
I'm not surprised at all to find myself articulating 'change' on canvas right now...it's the year 2020.

Description: New Wings refers to when a person goes through a awakening, transition or transformation. Such changes often occur through strife and difficulty. When we pass through to the other side of challenges we are truly changed, and that is when we feel our new wings developing, just before we get to take off and fly as our 'new self.'
I think her butterfly-eye gaze is solid and strong and yet she is brave enough to be open and interactive in the world without fear. I see goodness and fortitude in her. I strive to be like this.

Spiraling forward to the darker regions are fingers of gleaming light outstretched as if belonging to a luminous hand that seeks fertile soil for which to drop its seeds of life. The dynamic contrast between violent light-filled eruptions and the serene, cool, darker tones twist and turn on the canvas resulting in a single braided event. Creation arrives from some unknown realm, nameless and inventing everything.
